Ngozumpa glacier longest glacer of Nepal
Ngozumpa Glacier Research – Studying the Impact of Climate Change in the Heart of the Himalayas
Ngozumpa Glacier is one of the longest glaciers in the Himalayas, stretching over 36 kilometers, and is located below Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world. This glacier plays a vital role in the hydrological and ecological balance of the Gokyo Valley region and the greater Sagarmatha National Park.
In recent years, the effects of global warming have increasingly impacted the glacier, causing it to melt at an alarming rate. Like many other glaciers across Nepal, Ngozumpa Glacier is retreating inch by inch, contributing to the formation and expansion of glacial lakes and posing risks such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
Scientific Importance of Ngozumpa Glacier
The Ngozumpa Glacier is a key site for glaciological and climate research. Researchers and climate scientists are particularly interested in this glacier because:
- It is located in a sensitive high-altitude ecosystem.
- It helps monitor long-term climate trends in the Everest region.
- It influences the hydrology of downstream river systems.
- It is adjacent to Gokyo Lakes, which are also under threat due to glacier melt.
Our Research Contribution
Himalayan Eco-Culture Trek & Research Expeditions has been actively involved in glacier and climate research across Nepal since 2014. Our work on the Ngozumpa Glacier includes:
- Assisting with field data collection and local logistics
- Organizing glaciology and hydrology-focused research treks
- Supporting satellite data validation, drone surveys, and sediment sampling
- Providing skilled local guides and porters familiar with research protocols
- Offering access to historical data and local knowledge of the glacier’s behavior
We are proud to collaborate with international scientists, universities, environmental researchers, and independent researchers in facilitating glacier research expeditions in the Everest region.
Why Work With Us?
- Experience: Over a decade of hands-on support in Himalayan glacier research
- Local Access: Deep knowledge of the terrain, weather, and high-altitude logistics
- Research Support: Coordination of permits, field gear, camps, and translation
- Trusted Partner: Previously worked with global institutions and private researchers
Join Us in Understanding and Preserving the Himalayas
As global warming continues to threaten Nepal’s glaciers, including Ngozumpa, the need for ongoing and collaborative scientific research is more urgent than ever. If you are a scientist, climate researcher, or academic institution looking to study the Ngozumpa Glacier or the greater Everest region, Himalayan Eco-Culture Trek & Research Expeditions is your ideal local research partner.
