Makalu Expedition: 60 days in Nepal

Makalu Expedition: Conquer the Fifth-Highest Mountain in the World
The Makalu Expedition is one of the most challenging and rewarding Himalayan adventures available to elite mountaineers. Rising to an awe-inspiring 8,485 meters (27,838 feet), Mount Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain in the world, nestled within the remote and rugged landscape of Makalu-Barun National Park in eastern Nepal.

Unlike Everest or Manaslu, Makalu is a less-traveled giant—ideal for serious climbers seeking solitude, purity of nature, and the ultimate test of endurance.

What is the Makalu Expedition?
The Makalu Expedition is a full-scale 8,000-meter peak climbing expedition that involves technical ascents, glacier travel, high-altitude endurance, and extreme weather navigation. It typically takes around 6 to 8 weeks and includes acclimatization, base camp setup, load ferrying, and summit attempts.

The expedition begins with a thrilling flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a scenic but strenuous trek through lush forests, high-altitude villages, and glacial valleys to reach Makalu Base Camp (4,870m). From here, climbers establish several high camps leading up to the summit.

Why Climb Mount Makalu?
1. True Wilderness and Remoteness
Unlike more commercialized peaks, Makalu offers a pristine climbing experience—no crowds, no traffic, and no distractions. The trails wind through the Makalu-Barun Valley, known for its dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, alpine meadows, and rare biodiversity.

2. Technical Mountaineering Challenge
Makalu is not a beginner’s mountain. Its summit pyramid demands serious climbing skills, especially on its steep knife-edge ridges and exposed final push. The climb includes rock, snow, and ice climbing—making it one of the most technically demanding 8,000ers in Nepal.

3. Majestic Himalayan Views
From the summit of Makalu, climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang, and Kanchenjunga—a 360-degree Himalayan amphitheater rarely seen from other summits.

Makalu Expedition Difficulty & Requirements
✔ Physical Fitness
Climbers must be in excellent physical and mental condition, with prior experience above 6,000m or 7,000m peaks.

✔ Technical Skills
You should be proficient in using crampons, ice axes, jumars, and abseiling on fixed lines. This is not a peak for first-time climbers.

✔ Permits & Logistics
Mount Makalu requires:

  • Expedition permit from the Government of Nepal
  • Climbing liaison officer
  • Local support team (guides, cooks, porters, yaks)
